The One and Only Ivan Book Review

If you were a gorilla in mall, the star attraction, wouldn’t you want to go home at one point? Ivan was a carefree gorilla, until Ruby the elephant arrived. The author Katherine Applegate wrote this book entitled The One and Only Ivan, which was copyrighted in 2012. The genre of this book is Children’s Literature and it won a Newberry award for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The author’s inspiration was actually to write a story based on a true story. Ivan was an actual gorilla and other major parts of the book are true. This book was one of the best books I’ve read.

This book was about a gorilla, Ivan, who lives contently drawing and watching TV in the day, when he’s not performing. Ivan and the other animals live in Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. Stella(elephant) and Bob(stray dog) are Ivan’s friends at the mall. Mack, the manager of the mall, had a special relationship with Ivan. So did Julia, the custiodian’s(George) daughter. She was the one who got him into drawing.

Business isn’t going well at the mall, so Mack brings in a new animal. It’s a baby elephant named Ruby, who was bought by Mack from the circus. Ruby and Ivan talk about going back to the jungle. Ivan is the one who helped Ruby when Stella was put to sleep because of her leg.

Since this book is written from Ivan’s point of view, we only know his internal and external conflicts. The internal conflicts of Ivan were that he was getting bored and lonely in his domain. There wasn’t an exact external conflict, but Ivan was getting bigger, which was a problem for him, since his cage was small. This was the reason why Mack had to put him in the mall because he was too big to be in his house (this is why they both have a special relationship. The rising action is Ivan and Ruby finally make it to the zoo. Ivan had kept the promise Stella had made and worked hard to get there. The climax is when Ivan finally gets to the zoo, but he couldn’t get along with the other gorillas, since he hadn’t been in the while since he was little. The workers had to separate them until they got along and the workers realized. The falling action is a very sweet happy ending. Ivan gets put in the cage with the other gorillas and is glad to see Ruby with the other elephants. Bob becomes Julia’s new dog; he finds this out when Julia meets him in the zoo. Her dad became the custodian of the zoo.

This book was a very interesting book because it’s not everyday you see a book like this. To make this book even more better, it actually happened in real life. This part is about Ivan finding Ruby. “ She’s far away, belly deep in tall grass with others by her side. Ruby. ‘She’s here, Stella,’ I whisper. ‘Ruby’s safe. Just like I promised.’ I call to Ruby, but the wind tugs at my words and I know she’ll never hear me. Still, Ruby pauses for a second, her ears spread wide like tiny snails. Then, with lumbering grace, she moves on through the grass.” (pg 294-295 Applegate) Each part in this book has a title, this one is called safe. I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars and I would recommend this book to anyone who loves animals, zoo, art, or fun books.

I don’t want to write so much because I don’t want to bore people. I don’t know if you want me to write more like this or not.
